Recording Registration

Register performances and link them to musical works

What is a Recording?

A recording is a specific performance or rendition of a musical work. While the musical work is the "song," the recording is a particular version performed and produced by specific artists.

Recording Includes:

  • Specific performance by artists
  • Production and engineering
  • Unique arrangement or interpretation
  • Master recording files

Multiple Recordings for One Work

A single musical work can have many recordings. Each recording can have different performers, producers, and arrangements.

Example: "Yesterday" by The Beatles

- Musical Work: "Yesterday" (composition by Paul McCartney)
- Recording 1: The Beatles' original 1965 version
- Recording 2: Ray Charles' cover version
- Recording 3: Frank Sinatra's version
- All link to the same musical work!

Recording Royalty Distribution

Recording creators receive 84% of all royalties. This is split between performers and producers based on your specified percentages.

Example: Recording with 2 Performers, 1 Producer

If the recording earns 100 NUT:

  • Musical work creators: 16 NUT (16%)
  • Recording creators: 84 NUT (84%)
  • Performer 1 (50%): 42 NUT (50% of 84)
  • Performer 2 (50%): 42 NUT (50% of 84)
  • Producer (100%): 0 NUT (if performers get 100%, producers get 0)

Note: You define the split between performers and producers

Performers vs Producers Split

The 84% recording royalty is typically split between performers and producers. Common splits:

50/50 Split

Performers: 50% of 84% = 42%
Producers: 50% of 84% = 42%

70/30 Split

Performers: 70% of 84% = 58.8%
Producers: 30% of 84% = 25.2%

100/0 Split

Performers: 100% of 84% = 84%
